Supervisors reverse course, fund second Bay Transit bus

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors agreed on Thursday, March 26, at a budget work session, to fund two Bay Transit buses in the proposed county fiscal year 2026-2027 (FY 26-27) budget.

During a Feb. 24 budget work session, it was presented to supervisors that a way to lower expenditures was to eliminate one of two Bay Transit buses partially funded by the county.

In a summary report on the proposed FY 26-27 budget from the March 26 meeting, County Administrator Matt Walker typed in bold letters, “Bay Transit funding for both buses has been restored (level funding from FY 2026) at the request of the board.”

During both public comment periods at a March 3 board meeting, citizens spoke in favor of keeping the bus. Tom Clarke of Urbanna said that there is currently more rider demand than Bay Transit’s two buses can accommodate. “Taking a bus away would greatly hurt a lot of our people here in the county,” he said…
