Budget balance quest proves challenging

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors is struggling to balance a proposed $37,207,000 fiscal year 2026-2027 (FY 26-27) draft budget and have pushed adoption into May or June.

The main issue is that the Commonwealth of Virginia has delayed adoption of its budget until “April 23 at the earliest” and the county must know the state appropriation to schools and social services before finalizing the budget.

Although supervisors have been encouraging no tax increases, the draft budget calls for an increase in Business, Professional, and Occupational License tax and personal property…
