Middlesex firefighters respond to blaze at Urbanna residence

All four fire departments in Middlesex County responded to a house fire on Taylor Avenue in the Town of Urbanna on Thursday, Feb. 5, around 8:15 a.m.

Fire started in an upstairs bedroom of a wood-frame “cottage row” house. The row of houses, all constructed alike, were built around 1902 to house supervisors and their families at the Urbanna Manufacturing Company. The firm produced shirts, overalls and excelsior. The company closed around 1910.

Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) Lt. Sidney Phelps said the fire started either in the upstairs bedroom or inside the wall along the bedroom. The fire traveled up into the attic and downstairs…
