Maj. Sampson sworn in as interim MC sheriff

On March 19, Judge DeFord swore in Michael “Mickey” Edward Sampson II as the new Middlesex County sheriff, effective April 1.

Major Sampson, who has been the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy since 2012, will replace longtime Sheriff David P. Bushey, 65, who is retiring for health reasons. Maj. Sampson will serve as interim sheriff until a full-term sheriff is elected in a special election set for Nov. 3.

Sheriff Bushey, who has been sheriff 14 years, submitted his notice of resignation in a letter to County Administrator Matt Walker on Feb. 6.

Virginia Code states that the highest ranking officer in the office be appointed until a special election can take place. Maj. Sampson is the highest ranking officer.
