Bob Duval was working on his dock, walking in the marsh of Healy’s Creek, when he fell. When he got cleaned up there was a tiny cut on his shin, a puncture about the size of a pencil’s lead. He didn’t know then that Vibrio vulnificus had entered his body.
About 24 hours later, he and his wife Kate packed up to head back to Goochland. He still felt fine.
However, in the 20 minutes it took for them to drive from Hardyville to Saluda, Bob had a fever and chills. His body was under attack from the Vibrio bacteria.
