Taxpayers question county subsidizing water authority

County bought fire hydrants

Following a public hearing on Jan. 6, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors approved zoning ordinance changes regarding hooking onto the Middlesex Water Authority (MWA) water lines.

Subsidizing water

During the public hearing three citizens leveled complaints that taxpayers are subsidizing the MWA and those served by it. The MWA’s 42 miles of water lines run from two wells located just south of Urbanna to Topping and to the end of General Puller Highway (Route 33) in Deltaville at Stingray Point.

Fire hydrants

Middlesex County Administrator Matt Walker explained later in the meeting that the county invested money in the water system for fire hydrants and larger water lines that were needed to provide water volume and pressure to supply hydrants for 20 miles to Stingray Point…
