Hartfield is the crossroads of motorists traveling between Mathews-Gloucester counties and towards the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge and Lancaster County.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has two projects planned for Hartfield  — a left turn lane at General Puller Highway (Route 33) and Regent Road; and to the south, a roundabout at Twigg’s Ferry Road (Route 3) and Stamper’s Bay Road.

VDOT has begun preliminary work to create a left turn lane at the intersection of General Puller Highway and Regent Road in Hartfield, said Alexis Breeden, senior communications specialist for VDOT’s Fredericksburg District.

Roundabout

VDOT is also planning a $7 million roundabout at the intersection of Twigg’s Ferry Road (Route 3) and Stamper’s Bay Road (Route 630) about a mile south of Hartfield and just north of “Doc” Jones Used Auto Parts.

Traffic count

According to a 2024 VDOT traffic count, Route 3 carries an average of 8,100 vehicles a day, reported Kelly Hannon, communications manager for VDOT’s Fredericksburg District.

Stampers Bay Road carries an average of 2,100 vehicles a day east of Route 3 towards Deltaville. Stampers Bay Road has an average of 150 vehicles a day traveling west of Route 3 towards the Piankatank River.

VDOT crash data from Aug., 2020 to Aug., 2025 at Route 3 and Stampers Bay totals 10 crashes.
