The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted on Sept. 7 to “put up” $1.15 million to compete for a Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI) grant that would give every household in the county broadband availability.
If the county receives the $10.5 million grant, it could provide Internet access to all of the remaining unserved areas of the county. However, the grant is highly competitive.
Hartfield representative John Koontz, recommended that the county needs to put up at least $800,000 to show the state that Middlesex wants and needs the grant.
County Administrator Matt Walker suggested that a more substantial gesture to the state would be to approve $1.15 million, the maximum amount suggested…
