St. Clare Walker’s Aiden Major excels in oyster essay contest

The more than 50 Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA) members who attended the virtual Annual Membership Meeting on Jan. 9 were delighted by the extraordinary middle school students who won the TOGA and C&F Bank essay contest this year. Because there were exceptional essays submitted from across Virginia, the judges decided to recognize five winning essays.

Among the winners was a Middlesex County resident, Aiden Major, an eighth grade student at St. Clare Walker Middle School in Locust Hill, who won an honorable mention award.

Other winners included:

  • Carina Pallo, eighth grade, home school, Richmond, first place.
  • Jordan Sadeg, sixth grade, Thomas Hunter Middle School, Mathews, second place.
  • Hunter Owens, sixth grade, Thomas Hunter Middle School, Mathews, third place.
  • Shyanne Carlton, seventh grade, Peasley Middle School, Gloucester, honorable mention.

You can read these essays and see these young people reading their essays, at oystergardener.org.
