Middlesex Kiwanians learn about helper dogs

At a recent meeting of the Middlesex County Kiwanis Club, Kiwanians learned about the various ways that dogs support and assist humans. Their speaker was one of their  members, Doug Dillard, who is currently the owner of a therapy dog named Kaiser. Kaiser and Doug visit hospitals, schools and physicians’ offices that request the support of a therapy dog for their patients.

There are different types of support that dogs and other animals can provide to humans. During his presentation, Doug focused emotional support animals.

Doug explained some important facts about emotional support animals:

Therapy dogs are selected because of certain characteristics to undergo extensive training. These include being friendly and gentle; having achieved certification for obedience training and proving that they can remain calm in various situations; and they are insured and certified for therapy work. After careful selection and extensive training, therapy dogs provide humans with some exceptional and important support:

They provide unconditional love and a calming presence…
