Fee ceiling on business licenses may be eliminated

Move could generate $70,000
in revenue annually for county

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors is considering eliminating the current $7,500 payment cap for a Middlesex County Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL).

BPOL tax is a tax on business’ gross receipts — total revenue before deductions — rather than on net income. The highest amount currently required to be paid in Middlesex is $7,500, even when a tax on a business’ gross receipts goes over that amount.

Middlesex County Commissioner of Revenue Mae Diggs said in a telephone interview with the Sentinel last week that the amount of increase in revenues by eliminating the cap would bring about $70,000…
