Redistricting election: Middlesex, Mathews voters among top participants

Middlesex and Mathews counties are among the top five jurisdictions in the state in terms of the percentage of registered voters who have already voted in the redistricting special election, reported Melissa D. Welch, director of elections and general registrar for Middlesex County.

April 21 is the final day to vote on the redistricting plan.

As of this week, Mathews County leads the 133 jurisdictions in the state with 22.9% of voters having already cast their ballots, reported Welch. Middlesex is sixth with 17% of registered voters having voted early. “Mathews is number one and usually is always in the top three for every election,” said Welch. “This is an unusual trend for Middlesex County voters. We are very close to presidential election turnout early voting numbers.”

Counties with the highest percentage of early voter turnout are as follows: Mathews 22.9%, James City County 19.3%, Fluvanna County 18.6%, Northumberland County 17.6%, Middlesex County 17%, Goochland County 16.8%, York County 16.5%, Lancaster County 16.2%, and Northampton 15.2%.
