Edmund Berkeley IV and James Montague of Middlesex County are names not well known, but names that every student of county history should know for their involvement with the American Revolution.

If the British had won the Revolutionary War, most likely Washington and Henry would have taken their last breath from a hangman’s noose.

So would have been the case of Middlesex patriots Berkeley and Montague. The two were the elected representatives to the Virginia Assembly that spearheaded Virginia’s participation in the revolution.
