Steel is being erected this week for a new 4,400 square-foot terminal building at Hummel Field airport in Topping.
The Virginia Department of Aviation (VDOA) will pay for 89% of the cost of the $1.7 million terminal (about $1.5 million). The remaining $187,000 will be split equally by airport owner Middlesex County, and terminal builder DelCorp, whose president is Oscar Barber, a longtime aviator. Each will pay $93,500.
The current airport terminal is a small hand-me-down portable building that is decades old, said Barber, of Topping.
The new terminal will be a public building, with a 600 square-foot conference room, he added. “For a very small investment the county will have a place to conduct public meetings and operate the fuel sales and hangar rental business.”
Barber, who turns 84 in December, said he has always thought Hummel Field could be more. “I’ve always wanted something better since I started flying out of Hummel in 1963. And, I’ve reached the point where I have the knowledge and ability. I’m doing it for the aviation community that I’ve been part of.”
