One seriously injured person was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital following a crash on U.S. Route 17 about a mile north of Saluda, reported First Sgt. J.A. Teagle of the Virginia State Police’s Gloucester Office this week.
According to police, Virginia State Trooper Daniel J. Wright investigated the two-vehicle crash on Dec. 9 that occurred at 12:43 p.m. at Route 17 and Route 615 (Braxton-Corr Road).
Through Trooper Wright’s investigation, it was determined a UPS 2015 Freightliner pulled out in front of a 2026 Chevrolet Suburban at that intersection resulting in injuries to both drivers and the passenger in the Suburban. The Suburban was traveling south on Route 17 and the UPS truck was attempting to cross Route 17 from the median crossover.
Mark Eben Rhodes, 33, of White Stone, was identified as driving the UPS truck and was issued a Virginia Uniform Summons for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
Katherine Vail Ratlif, 76, of California, Md., the driver of the Suburban, was transported by helicopter due to the injuries sustained in the crash. Her injuries appeared to be serious, but non-life threatening according to the trooper. Her passenger, Miles Randolph Ratlif, 71, was also transported by ambulance due to his injuries.
Authorities had released no further information at press time.
