The removal of sand at Mill Creek boat ramp in Wake started last week in an effort to open up the ramp to trailered boat traffic.

Two excavators and several trucks have been working and hauling sand this week. “They are about 50% to 75% finished and it should be totally open for boats soon,” said Kretz.

Mill Creek boat ramp has a history of filling in with sand every 10 to 12 months. The sand is pushed up into the ramp opening by wind, seas and storms — Mother Nature!

“What we are doing is just putting a Band-Aid on a much larger problem but we can afford the Band-Aid,” he said. “This is a very popular boat ramp and it is not something we want to throw in the trash.”

Hartfield Supervisor Bill Harris said that he has had several local commercial fishermen thank him for the county’s efforts to get the boat ramp usable again. Watermen use the landing for oystering in the winter and crabbing in spring and summer.
