In separate Monday incident, parts fall from bridge
The Virginia State Police (VSP) originally reported that an Aug. 1 crash on the Robert O. Norris Bridge involved a towed camper that left the scene. However on Aug. 13, the VSP reported that the driver of the truck-camper in this incident had been located and the truck-camper were inspected by the Virginia State Police and found to not be involved with the crash, reported Robin Lawson, the VSP public relations director.
Emergency work Monday
In an apparently unrelated incident, steel parts reportedly fell from the Norris Bridge — apparently sometime Monday — forcing emergency bridge work and temporary lane closures Monday, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) news release. The work was triggered by a “citizen notification.”
“Crews (removed) an existing strip of steel edge forming under the bridge for the safety of watercraft below the bridge,” the release said. “Norris Bridge is currently safe for travel. The removal of the steel edge forming does not affect the structural capacity of the Norris Bridge. This work is to ensure the continued safety of marine watercraft on the Rappahannock River.” After lengthy back-ups at the bridge Monday afternoon, traffic was moving smoothly over the bridge Monday evening.
VDOT updates on the bridge are available online at 511.vdot.virginia.gov.
