The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) approved the “Stingray Point Contraband Sailor Proclamation” and endorsed the location of a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) historical roadside sign to be placed in front of the Deltaville Community Association (DCA) building on July 17.
The proclamation also stated that the MCBS “do hereby proclaim in perpetuity July 15 to be Stingray Point Contraband Sailor Day.”
On Tuesday, June 1, Bessida Cauthorne White, president of the Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society (MPAAGHS), presented the proclamation to the board.
The proclamation is part of an effort to bring attention to the heroics of several Middlesex County slaves who gained their freedom in 1861 by escaping bondage using the Stingray Point Lighthouse as a safe haven and a platform for escape…
