The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors responded to a lawsuit filed by Middlesex Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Hurd asking the court to direct the supervisors to fund a full-time assistant commonwealth’s attorney, “or order the discontinuance of usage of the body-worn cameras.”
Hurd argues that the assistant commonwealth’s attorney is necessary due to increased workload required due to the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office using body-worn cameras and the recordings that must be reviewed by an assistant commonwealth’s attorney. Hurd filed the lawsuit on July 29, in Middlesex Circuit Court.
Hurd’s petition states that since 2019 the Virginia State Budget “has provided that localities in the commonwealth that employ the use of body-worn cameras for its law enforcement officers must establish and fund an assistant commonwealth’s attorney” who would review body-worn camera recordings.
