The area remains in winter’s grip with a thick layer of ice making walking treacherous. “I can’t walk across my yard,” said Betsy Hudgins of Deltaville. “I can’t remember it ever being like this.”
Shuffling seems to be one way to remain upright. Temperatures constantly below freezing have kept ice from melting and many people home.

From Jan. 22 through Feb. 2, 2026, the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad (MCVRS) responded to a total of 78 incidents, including an increase in ice-related falls, reported David Layman, the Middlesex County Emergency Services coordinator.
Beginning Saturday, Jan. 24, volunteer firefighters from all four Middlesex fire departments responded to all MCVRS calls to assist with access to incident locations and to support two-person medic crews in maneuvering stretchers in snow and ice conditions, said Layman.
As of Monday, MCVRS response procedures have returned to normal, said Layman. Volunteer fire departments are no longer automatically added to calls, but remain on stand by as needed if additional information is obtained from the 911 Center regarding access issues or hazardous conditions at a specific location.
