
The Middlesex High School (MHS) football team (2-4, 0-0) lost to the Northampton Yellow Jackets, 43-24, at the Chargers homecoming game on Friday night at the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex at MHS in Saluda.
The Yellow Jackets dominated the first half ending the half with a 36-8 score. The Chargers first half offensive score came when Davonte Griffin dodged Yellow Jacket defenders with 6:39 left in the second period and ran for a 21-yard touchdown run. MHS made good on the 2-point conversion with Griffin passing to Dereon Cooke who scored.
The Chargers came back in the second half scoring 16 points and holding the Yellow Jackets to 7 points. Griffin had two touchdowns in the second half, rushed for a total of 140 yards in the game and made good on a 2-point conversion, scoring 20 points in the game. Griffin scored on a 20-yard run in the third quarter and caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jakub Bowen in the fourth quarter.
Cooke scored another 2-point conversion in the second half by catching a pass from Griffin. Cooke had a total of 4 points in the game, along with rushing for 166 yards on kickoffs. He had five kickoff runs averaging 33.2 yards a carry.
Bowen paced the defense with a total of 12 tackles, eight solos, and four assists. Griffin had 11 tackles, eight solos, three assists; Travis Archer, six tackles, three solos, three assists; Cooke, five tackles, three solos, two assists; and Zach Dean, four tackles, two solos and two assists.

The Chargers will play their first district game Friday night at West Point High School against the Pointers (2-3, 0-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
