Middlesex High School’s girls and boys cross country teams each captured runner-up honors in the Oct. 1 five-way meet at Beaverdam Park in Gloucester County. Host Mathews placed first at the meet, which also featured King & Queen Central, Lancaster, Essex and Northampton.

“We had a top five runner who was unable to run, otherwise the girls would have taken first,” said Jennifer Harrow, head cross country coach. She added that the same thing happened with the Middlesex boys team. “The boys also had a top five runner who was unable to run, which would have made it a bit closer.”

Middlesex’s Keichan Layne finished first among the large field of girl competitors from five schools. She ran the 5K (3.1 mile) course in 22 minutes, 30 seconds.

Other individual times for the Charger girls include, second, Miko Layne, 22:34; sixth, Makayla Moore, 25:08; eighth, Elsie Williams, 25:55; 14th, Sarah Laster, 28:05; and 17th, Olivia Hoffield, 29:52.

Darius Jones was the top boy finisher for the Chargers, coming in third with a time of 17 minutes, 58 seconds. Other individual times for the Charger boys include, fifth, Tanner Janisko, 18:34; 10th, Kevin Turner, 19:32; 11th, Chris Butler, 19:50; 13th, Allen Leonard, 20:59; 15th, Mason Kiku, 22:07; 17th, Bryson Hogge, 23:55; 18th, Matthew Williams, 25:27; and 20th, Joshua Huntley, 28:09.

In upcoming action, Middlesex’s harriers will host a six-way meet starting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Other teams participating in the meet on the Chargers campus are Lancaster, King & Queen Central, Westmoreland, King William and Rappahannock of Warsaw.
