Chargers down
Mathews 66-50
The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity basketball team (2-3, 1-1) picked up its first Tidewater District win and loss this week, defeating Mathews’ Blue Devils, 66-50, and losing to the King William (KW) Cavaliers, 75-58.
On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Chargers downed Mathews on the strong play of Davonte Griffin, who exploded for 31 points. Nine of those came from the 3-point range.
The Chargers played a strong game against King William on Tuesday, Dec. 16, but lost 75-58. The Cavaliers jumped to a 20-6 first quarter lead and never relinquished the lead the entire game. Even though Middlesex came back in the third quarter to tie the game, the Cavaliers always seemed to have an answer with their own scoring runs. KW was able to put the Chargers away in the fourth quarter scoring 16 points to the Chargers’ 3 points.
The Chargers comeback in the third quarter was sparked by Dereon Cooke, who scored all of his 17 points in the second and third quarters, knocking down four 3-point shots.
After Christmas break, MHS will host two district games, one with the King & Queen Central Royal Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026 and a second district matchup with the Charles City Panthers on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026. The game tip-offs are set for 7 p.m.
