MHS girls basketball downs Tigers

The Middlesex Lady Chargers varsity basketball team posted a win and two losses in three games before the holiday break and will “continue to search to find their footing” in the new year, said head coach Neil Wake.

The Lady Chargers are now 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Tidewater District play. “I keep seeing signs of improvement but we need to learn how to finish games,” said Coach Wake. “We are in position but our decision making in crunch time leaves us on the short end of the score.”

The Lady Chargers routed the Lady Tigers of King and Queen 45-26 on December 17.

Leading Middlesex was Amber Self with 17 points and Airiana Beverley with 14 points. Also for Middlesex, Lane Anderson had 6 points, Aniyah Thompson 4, Taylor Witcher 2, and Taniaya Dandridge 2.

On December 18 the Lady Chargers could not find their offense in a 37-29 loss to the Lancaster Lady Red Devils. While the Lady Chargers nearly held Lancaster in check, they could manage just 29 points themselves. Aniyah Thompson led MHS with 10 points, Airiana Beverley had 8, Amber Self 5, Taylor Witcher 4 and Lane Anderson 2.

On December 20 the Lady Chargers lost another close game, this time to the visiting Mathews Lady Blue Devils 57-50.

Mathews came out on fire and outlasted the Lady Chargers to secure the district win going into the holiday break.

Leading Middlesex was Amber Self with 19 points, Airiana Beverley had 11, Aniyah Thompson 10, Ellie McMinn 6 points, and Taylor Witcher and Lane Anderson 2 apiece.

The Middlesex varsity will host Warhill at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, and will host West Point on Tuesday, January 7 at 7 p.m.
