“Interrupting God” during time of disruptions

A college professor became annoyed with his students’ frequent interruptions to his office work. Then one day it occurred to him: these are not interruptions to my work, they are my work.

I have heard this story told in several ways. Apparently it relates to us all. The title of a recent online article puts the issue squarely in this COVID-19 season: “Move Over, Daily Rhythms. Disruption is the New Routine.”

The attitude we take toward the interruptions of others to our plans will go a long way toward determining the quality of our relationships and our peace of mind in a world of constant disruption.

Have you ever felt as if you were interrupting God with your prayers and petitions? It is tempting to imagine that God is like us, easily annoyed and impatient with our petty concerns. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Son of God teaches us that our Heavenly Father is not annoyed with our constant prayers; the Father welcomes them, for He delights in giving good gifts to His children. God knows that our requests and needs offered in faith are not interruptions, but signs of the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in us…
