Citizens encouraged the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors to take over ownership of the Jackson Creek Public Dock in Deltaville — but not before the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) does a complete fix of the dock.
VDOT wants out of ownership and maintenance of four public wharves on the Middle Peninsula, three of which are in Gloucester County and the other is Jackson Creek Wharf in Middlesex. This was announced at a Middle Peninsula Public Access Authority (PAA) meeting in August.
VDOT has been maintaining the four docks since 1932 when the “end of the road” wharves were considered part of the secondary road system. The state of Virginia took over maintenance of secondary roads from the commonwealth’s counties through the 1932 Byrd Road Act.
