The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors tabled action to conduct more research on the hiring of a harbor master who would oversee all creek harbors in the county.
At the board’s Sept. 1 meeting, Pinetop (Deltaville) District Supervisor Randy Crittenden proposed the hiring. He said that “Middlesex County is surrounded by navigable water on three sides. Recreation and commercial boating are vital components of our identity and heritage. We have numerous marinas, boat yards and other marine-related commercial enterprises that contribute to our economy significantly.
“Our Economic Development Authority (EDA) has recently purchased a large tract of waterfront property (on Broad Creek in Deltaville) one of our most important commercial waterways and is in the process of building a multi-lane public boat ramp,” he said. “They are also exploring the best uses for the adjoining property, focusing on waterfront industry and education.
