Halloween on Oct. 31 easily recalls children of all ages in colorful costumes going from house-to-house as they trick-or-treat for candy. “All Saints Day,” or in some countries “the Day of the Dead,” is the next day. Halloween focuses on spooky fun, costumes, and warding-off or scaring-away evil spirits, while “Day of the Dead” is a peaceful, joyful family reunion remembering and honoring the souls of deceased loved ones.

On Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. Ware Episcopal Church in Gloucester County will offer a celebration in song, honoring those who have died, especially those who passed in the past year.

At the conclusion of the service, Mr. Cooke’s majestic postlude will be J.S. Bach’s stunning “Fugue in E-flat Major.”

Guest singers from surrounding counties will join the Ware Church Choir and congregation to sing anthems and hymns of praise. This all-sung evening prayer service is known as “Evensong.”

A reception for all in the parish hall will follow the service to greet each other along with the musicians.

Founded in 1652, the congregation and community will soon celebrate the 375th anniversary of this historic church. The red-brick exterior with Georgian style interior architecture is located at 7825 John Clayton Memorial Highway.

Folks continue to celebrate Kilmarnock United Methodist Church’s Laundry Day Ministry.

Church members go to Speed Wash, 110 Irvington Road, Kilmarnock, three days each month to greet, talk with customers, help bring their laundry into the facility and pay for all laundry costs during the nine hours each month that they are present, reported Whitney Lang.

Thanks to the generous contributions of church members and later due to the receipt of a grant, the ministry has expanded from once each month to three times a month, impacting more than 231 people during the first year, said Lang.

The ministry has grown to include water and snacks, individual packets of detergent and coloring books and crayons for children who accompany their parents. The owner of the laundromat has been a part of this mission from its inception and has made these “laundry missionaries” welcome.

To support this mission, call 804-435-1797.
