Middlesex High School’s (MHS) girls and boys cross country teams each captured first place wins in last week’s five-way meet at Hills Quarter in Lancaster County. The Charger girls scored 22 points and were followed by Northampton, 48; Rappahannock of Warsaw, 59; and Lancaster, 89. Westmoreland lacked enough girls to compete as a team. The Charger boys scored 27 points and were followed by Rappahannock, 46; and Northampton, 52. Lancaster and Westmoreland each lacked enough boys to compete as a team.

It should be noted that in high school cross country, the team with the lowest score wins. This score is calculated by adding the finishing places of the first five runners from each team. Just like in golf, the lower the total, the better.

Coach comments

“This is the first race I’ve had all runners be able to compete — minus two that are currently injured,” MHS Head Cross Country Coach Jennifer Harrow told the Sentinel. “It was nice being able to see how those that have not competed yet fit into the scoring line-up. The course is a bit slower than most of our courses as it is mostly thick field grass, which makes it a much harder run. I’m very excited about how the team is coming together.”

What’s next

Coach Harrow’s harriers are next in action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Mathews, where they will also compete against runners from Rappahannock, Northumberland and West-moreland. Charger fans are encouraged to come out and cheer the teams on as they tackle the Blue Devil course.
