NINETEEN STUDENTS PLACED IN QUARANTINE

On Friday, Jan. 22, 146 Middlesex County teachers, staff and school board members received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccinations from staff of the Three Rivers Health Department. A second dose will be needed in several weeks for the shots to fully work. The vaccines were administered at Middlesex Elementary School. Students at Middlesex Elementary School (MES) and St. Clare Walker Middle School (SCW) were diagnosed last week with the COVID-19 virus, reported Middlesex County Public Schools Superintendent Peter Gretz.

“Eight MES students were considered to have been in close contact in school and 11 other students were considered to be in close contact while on the bus, all of whom will be quarantined,” he wrote.

History of COVID-19 in schools

The Middlesex County School Board voted at the start of the school year in August 2020 to conduct the first nine weeks of school in a “virtual” setting. The board voted in September to go to in-school classes starting Nov. 5 using a hybrid setting.

Also due to COVID-19, the school board voted in December not to allow winter sports this school year, which canceled boys and girls basketball, wrestling, forensics and sideline cheering.

In November, Dr. Gretz notified parents that a MES staff member tested positive for COVID-19. This resulted in the quarantine of five students and two staff members.
