December sports nixed

Middlesex schools cancel team sports for now; will re-evaluate things in Jan.

Middlesex County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Peter Gretz announced last week that MCPS will not be participating in Virginia High School League (VHSL) winter sports for the 2020-2021 school year.

Winter sports include girls and boys basketball, wrestling, swimming, forensics, scholastic bowl and cheering. Middlesex High School head wrestling coach Joel Anderson said this week, “I feel the superintendent has done the right thing. With the pandemic, this is the safest move.

“When it comes to the virus, I think basketball and wrestling are the two most dangerous sports,” said Anderson. “There is constant physical contact in both sports and that’s what we are trying to keep away from.

“VHSL regulations were going to make it difficult for us to practice (wrestling),” said Anderson. “We could only have five to six kids practicing at a time. We have 30 kids on our (wrestling) team.

“I feel bad for seniors…
