Why set aside a penitential season like Lent?

If Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus every Sunday — rejoicing in forgiveness, hope, and eternal life — why do we also set aside a penitential season like Lent?

It is a fair question.

If the heart of the Christian faith is Christ is risen and God’s love triumphed over sin and death, why 40 days of self-examination, restraint and repentance?

The answer is not guilt. It is clarity.

Christians believe the resurrection is not merely a past event to commemorate, but a present reality to live. Each Sunday is a celebration of new life. But celebration alone does not guarantee transformation…
