Urbanna seeks state help to repair or replace bridge

The Urbanna Town Council is exploring ways to repair or replace the bridge that leads to the Urbanna Town Marina, it was reported at council’s Jan. 8 meeting.

The town-owned bridge was closed to vehicles on Dec. 19, 2025, due to concerns about its ability to safely hold motor vehicles. Part of the bridge’s foundation washed out just before the Urbanna Oyster Festival and the town patched it temporarily.

The bridge is not owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

Virginia Del. Keith Hodges, R-Urbanna, has been asked to introduce a special appropriations bill in the General Assembly to fund repair or replacement of the bridge.

The town is also seeking grants. Engineering firms have been contacted for estimates including Whitman, Requardt & Associates, located in Baltimore. With the bridge closed to vehicles, there was some question about using the marina for July 4 activities and council voted to not present the lighted drone show this year. (The cost has risen to $32,000, from $18,000 in 2025.)
