School board honors late SCW principal Fears

The Middlesex County School Board voted unanimously at its May 11 school board meeting to honor the life of Joseph (Joe) Clyde Fears Jr. with a proclamation.

Fears passed away Feb. 10, 2026. A 1962 Middlesex High School and Virginia Tech graduate and lifelong citizen of Middlesex, Fears worked for the Middlesex County Public Schools system (MCPS) for 35 years  — 28 of which he served as an administrator at St. Clare Walker (SCW) Middle School. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran, and as an officer and pilot of assault helicopters was awarded four medals for bravery.

“As a principal at SCW, Mr. Fears was a tough principal, but kind and always concerned, who looked for the best in everyone and had a quiet, stern demeanor, which fostered a natural respect of students, parents and teachers,” said School Superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz…
