Mathews High School recently announced it has canceled the rest of the school’s upcoming varsity football schedule due to low numbers and injuries.
Unfortunately, it’s become a growing trend nationwide as smaller schools like those classified in Virginia High School League’s Class 1 with an enrollment of 475 students or fewer are struggling with low participation.
Mathews disbanded its football program in 2022 but it returned with a five-game schedule in 2024 after a two-year hiatus. The Blue Devils were scheduled to play a full 10-game schedule this year.
Mathews Athletic Director Amy O’Neil wrote in a release this month she wanted “to commend and celebrate our players for everything they have accomplished over the past two years. Their dedication, heart and perseverance have been nothing short of inspiring.”
She stated the decision to cancel the remainder of the season was “not made lightly. Our top priority is and always will be the well-being of our student-athletes.”
According to the release, the team had a limited roster then suffered several injuries.
Mathews’ decision to disband its program for the remainder of the season leaves a void in the schedules of several district teams, including Middlesex, which was scheduled to host the Blue Devils on Nov. 7.
King & Queen Central High School only has a junior varsity football team this year and does not play a varsity schedule.
Charles City, despite forfeiting its season opener to Lancaster, has increased numbers and will “play the remainder of its varsity season,” according to CCHS athletic director Andre Jones.
