The annual essay contest is offered for all sixth grade students as part of the American History class experience taught by history teacher Marsha Jedlinski. As part of the contest, students visit the Urbanna Museum and Visitor’s Center on a class trip where the “Mitchell Map” hangs on the wall and where Dr. James Robusto gave an interpretive lecture on the map and Mitchell’s life.

The essays are judged on historical facts, ability to connect facts, sentence structure and grammar. Friends of Urbanna official Peni Roberts praised the work of the entire class. “We have some of the best essays that we have seen from so many of you,” she said.

Spurlock won first place honors; Carl Ambrose, second place who is also a Jacob’s Ladder Climber; Gabriella Pierce, third place; and Mackenna Haywood, fourth place. The top four essay winners received a certificate and a monetary award.
