Both the Middlesex High School (MHS) boys and girls cross country teams captured runner-up honors at the Oct. 30 region meet in West Point. The Charger squads now advance to the state meet, which is set for this Saturday, Nov. 8, at Green Hill Park in Salem. The girls race starts at 1 p.m. and the boys race starts at 1:45 p.m.

Girls region results
West Point won the girls region meet with a 27-point score. The Pointers were followed by Middlesex, 50; Northampton, 62; and Mathews, 81. (In cross country, the lower a team’s score, the better its performance.)
“It wasn’t the results the girls wanted after winning the district last week, but they gave their best effort with six of them getting course personal records,” said MHS Head Cross Country Coach Jennifer Harrow. “So you can’t be disappointed.”
Boys region results
Mathews won the boys region meet with a 32-point score. The Blue Devils were followed by Middlesex, 53; Northampton, 81; Rappahannock of Warsaw, 82; and West Point, 103.
“The guys had some great times and pushed,” said Coach Harrow. “Mathews always has a strong group of boys. Anymore, it’s all about just being able to recruit to field a full team of at least five.
“There were five schools without complete girls teams and four without complete boys teams. Their individual runners can still compete to obtain one of the five non-team positions to state.
“And these runners’ times have reduced drastically over the years that I have coached. Competition is a lot stronger.”
