Charger girls are top seed
The Middlesex High School volleyball team swept Charles City on Monday to begin the Region 1A Tournament. The Charger girls easily handled the visiting Panther girls winning in three sets.

The Lady Chargers (22-2) were undefeated in regular season play. Middlesex finished first in Region 1A and first in the Tidewater District, and as top seed will host the Region 1A Tournament, which continues tonight, Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. when they take on fifth seed Northumberland who defeated number four West Point on Monday 3-2.
Also on Monday, number two Lancaster defeated number seven Rappahannock of Warsaw 3-0; and number three Northampton defeated visiting number six Mathews.
The Region 1A Tournament championship will be on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. at the higher seed, which will be Middlesex if it wins on Nov. 6.
Lancaster, who the Lady Chargers defeated twice in regular season play, is in second place. The Lady Chargers only two losses this season were in non-district play in the Battle of the Bay Invitational Tournament when they lost to Lancaster and Peninsula Catholic. A replay could be looming if Middlesex and Lancaster make it to the Region 1A Tournament finals.

The winner of the Region 1A Tournament will host the quarterfinals of the State Class 1 Region A Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 15, while the Region 1A runner-up will travel to play the champion of another region. The state semifinals are set for Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the higher seed. The state final will be Nov. 22 at the Salem Civic Center.
