Madison Green is also named region player of the year

On May 24, the Region 1A girls tennis singles tournament quarterfinals and semifinals matches were played. Madison Green entered the singles tournament as the number two ranked singles player in the region to play in an eight-player bracket round. Due to two schools not participating, Green had a bye in the first round, which automatically advanced her to the semifinal round, where she played the West Point number one player. Green dominated her semifinal round match, winning quickly in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
On May 25, the tournament singles final round was played first thing on a cold, breezy morning. The pressure was on — the winner would go on to be named the 1A singles champion, the Region 1A player of the year, but more importantly, advance to the VHSL state individual singles tournament played at Virginia Tech.
Green came out strong in the first set and played her dominant, powerful tennis she’s known for, winning the first set quickly with a score of 6-1. In the second set, Green’s opponent battled and at one point was up a game in the set. Green had plenty of fight left in her, battled back herself, and ended up winning the second set 6-4.
Madison Green won the singles tournament, making her the Region 1A girls singles tennis champion. Green was also honored with the award for Region 1A player of the year.
The VHSL state individual singles and doubles tournament will be played at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on June 9 and 10.
