Although the varsity Lady Charger basketball team is young, they may have an advantage — many of the girls have played basketball together on teams coached by this year’s varsity head coach, Roy Self. Self has been coaching teams at St. Clare Walker Middle School for a few years, posting winning seasons, and also has been the junior varsity basketball coach at Middlesex High School.
Lady Charger Assistant Coach Michael Lewis Sr. is no stranger to the basketball program, having also coached multiple teams in his years around basketball.
“We have a very young team this year with no seniors and only one junior,” said Self. Alyssa Hooks is the only junior and will be playing small forward.
There are six sophomores. Rylee Buck and Anaiya Billups are the point guards. Brooklyn Horace is a shooting guard. Melody Jones and Allison Mendoza are power forwards. Sophia Sandlin is the center.
Four ninth graders made the varsity team. Grace Reza is playing point guard. Amya Kidd is a power forward. Alanna Billups is small forward. Payton Baker is playing center.
The squad hopes to improve on last year’s record, 5-13 overall and 4-7 in the Tidewater District, according to MaxPreps.com.
The JV and varsity Lady Chargers opened the season on Tuesday, Dec. 2, against visiting Northumberland.
Only the varsity travels to Chincoteague on Friday, Dec. 5, for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
The next home game is on Tuesday, Dec. 9, against Lancaster. The final game before the holiday break is Thursday, Dec. 18, against Mathews. The JV plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7 p.m.
