Chargers look sharp in Aug. 14 scrimmage; open at home Aug. 28 vs. Surry
The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger football team conducted its first scrimmage of the year against the Eastern Shore of Virginia’s Nandua High School on Friday, Aug. 14, at the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex in Saluda.
The Bristow-Boxley Field scrimmage was delayed for about 30 minutes because of a high humidity index, but the level went down as cloud coverage brought temperatures and humidity down.
The scrimmage was conducted by each team having 10 plays played on offense and then 10 played on defense. The first snap of the season was made by the Chargers and on the first set of 10 offensive plays, MHS scored twice on running plays, one for 30 yards and the other on a 25-yard run.
Middlesex has a new head coach as a former Charger player Matt Duke has taken over the helm. “We have over 50 players on varsity this year,” he said at the game. “This is an unheard of number of players coming out for a Middlesex High School football team.”
The Chargers are also going to field a junior varsity team. MHS Athletic Director Matt Stamm said, “It is great to see so much interest in our football program.”
The Chargers open their regular season on the MHS home field in Saluda on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game against the Surry County High School Cougars.
