Chargers battle back to re-take lead in
dramatic fourth quarter scoring frenzy

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger varsity football team (4-5, 2-1) defeated the West Point (WP) Pointers (3-5, 1-1), 24-18, in Tidewater District action Friday, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter for a dramatic comeback win.

Charger Davonte Griffin played one of his best games of the season, rushing for 190 yards averaging 9.5 yards a carry, had a 36-yard punt return run and scored four touchdowns. Griffin scored on a 60-yard run in the second quarter on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, and on a 26-yard run and 32-yard run in the fourth quarter.

West Point led the Chargers through the third quarter by scoring one touchdown in each of the first three quarters. MHS’s defense stepped up in the fourth quarter to hold the Pointers scoreless.

Jakub Bowen also paced the Chargers on offense with 29 yards rushing and he caught the only pass interception in the game for MHS. Dereon Cooke had a 2-yard run and JaMar Hammond had an 8-yard kickoff return.

Griffin and Bowen paced the Chargers on defense with 12 tackles apiece. Griffin had an outstanding 12 solo tackles and Bowen had seven solos and five assists. Maliki Reaves had eight tackles, five solos and three assists; Andrew Harrow, eight tackles, six solos and two assists; Travis Archer, seven tackles, three solos and four assists; and JaMar Hammond, five tackles, three solos and two assists.

There is no game scheduled this week for the Chargers, as the Mathews High School Blue Devils who were scheduled canceled their season because of a lack of players.

Although unconfirmed at press time, it is believed Middlesex will participate in the Nov. 14 Region A tournament. As the Sentinel goes to press, there is no word on the time, nor on the location of this tournament, nor on who the Chargers might play against.

According to the VHSL website, Middlesex  is  first in the Tidewater District, followed by West Point and Charles City.
