The Middlesex High School Charger football team dropped its first district game of the season, 26-6, against the West Point Pointers on Friday night.
West Point scored 18 points in the first half and defensively shut out the Chargers in the second half.
Offense
MHS’s only touchdown came in the second quarter when Davonte Griffin scored on a 2-yard run.
The Pointers were able to hold the Chargers to a total of 70 yards rushing as Griffin rushed for 46 yards in the game and Jakub Bowen had a total of 33 rushing yards on offense.
MHS quarterback Cash Steel had two pass completions, a 2-yard catch to Griffin and a 10-yard pass completion to Dereon Cooke. Steel had two completions on 11 attempts.
Defense
On defense, Griffin picked off a Pointers pass for an interception and he had 11 tackles, seven solos and four assists. Bowen paced the defense with 18 tackles, nine solos and nine assists.
Cooke also had 11 tackles, nine solos, two assists; Maliki Reaves, nine tackles, five solos, four assists; Donovan Jones, eight tackles, four solos, four assists; Travis Archer, eight tackles, four solos, four assists; Andrew Harrow, seven tackles, five solos, two assists, blocked field goal; Vincent Santos, five tackles, three solos, two assists; Steel and Jordan Fuller, two tackles each, one solo and one assist each.
Coming up
The Chargers will take on the (1-5) Charles City Panthers this Friday, Oct. 17. The matchup will be in the friendly confines of the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex on Bristow-Boxley Field on the MHS campus in Saluda. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
