Historic Urbanna bank building to house apartments

The Urbanna Town Council approved on Nov. 13 a Special Use Permit (SUP) to convert the second and third floors into two apartments in the former Bank of Middlesex building at the corner of Cross and Prince George streets.

The SUP application by White Rose Partners LLC was signed by Sean Hackney of Urbanna.

The SUP application states construction will begin immediately on the second floor. The third floor will be converted later. There will be one apartment on each floor.

The first floor, now used by Bay Design, will remain for office or retail space. This is in harmony with the town council’s desire to retain business uses on the first floor of buildings in the business district, Mayor Bill Goldsmith said earlier.

The exterior of the three-story building will not be altered.

“The design of each apartment will be high-end and consistent with an early 1900s look and feel updated with modern conveniences keeping it in line with the original use of the building, which was the home of the Bank of Middlesex,” states the application. The interior has not been updated since the 1970s.

The building has an elevator. The apartments will be handicapped accessible.
