Deltaville’s William Driscoll turns in top time in race on day of triple digit temps

The Deltaville 5K annually attracts hundreds of competitors from all over the country, but it was a “hometown boy” who won the 15th Deltaville 5K Saturday — William Driscoll, 19, a Deltaville resident competing in the male ages 15-19 division. His time was 17 minutes, 11 seconds.

While Driscoll’s time was almost two minutes slower than the 3.1-mile foot race’s top times in recent years, it should be noted that this year’s race was particularly challenging — it was run on a day when the temperature rose to the triple-digit range. That’s something unusual, even for a race run on a typically hot July day.

Top females

Jenna Jensen, 40, of Marlboro Township, N.J., turned in the race’s top female time, finishing in 20 minutes, 56 seconds. She competed in the female ages 40-49 division. The top Middlesex female finisher was Teresa Saxon, 30, of Wake, who finished with a 24:20 time and was the 13th female to cross the finish line.

“We had an incredible turnout this year — even with the extreme temps,” race rep Jennifer White told the Sentinel. “We actually had 492 registered 5K participants — the most on record for the event since I’ve been involved with it. I have records back to our 2019 event. The total registration breakdown is 492 5K participants, four ‘virtual’ 5K participants, and 45 Kids Fun Run participants.”

For a complete list of all 414 race finishers’ names (not all who registered finished), division, times and order of finish, be sure to pick up a copy of the July 16 print edition of the Southside Sentinel. The results are courtesy of the Deltaville 5K’s timing company, northern Virginia-based Bishop’s Events.

Event supports DCA

The Independence Day-themed race, which starts and finishes in front of the Deltaville Community Association (DCA) building and mostly uses stretches of General Puller Highway and Lovers Lane for its route, is a DCA fundraiser that helps maintain the DCA’s various community facilities.
