A special election is set for April 21 on a proposed constitutional amendment on redistricting, reported Melissa D. Welch, the Middlesex County director of elections and general registrar.
Welch explained that during the 2026 Regular Session of the Virginia General Assembly, legislators passed and the governor signed House Bill 1384 designating a proposed constitutional amendment question to be presented to voters in an April 21 special election.
The special election will contain only the question listed below on the proposed constitutional amendment. “Question: Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”
Early voting begins Friday, March 6, and will continue, Monday through Friday, ending Saturday, April 18. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Saturdays, April 11, and April 18, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. On Friday, April 10 the office will remain open until 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18 is the last day to vote early. The office is located at 105 Bowden St. in Saluda.
