Bike path network may still come to MC

Middlesex County has two combination pedestrian-bicycle paths in the works.

The county has been seeking grant funding for a “shared use path” in Deltaville since 2019; and the Middlesex Planning Department has submitted a grant application to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for a path starting at the town’s west boundary and extending ultimately to Bethpage Camp-Resort.

Due to cost (see this weeks issue of the Sentinel), this project will be broken into two phases, states a report from Middlesex Planning and Zoning Director Dave Kretz to the Middlesex Board of Supervisors.

Urbanna

  1. The first phase would run from the town limits to Port Town Lane, where the Port Town Village senior housing apartments are located.
  2. The second phase would extend approximately to Browns Lane on which Bethpage Camp-Resort is located.

The shared-use paths are between 10 and 12 feet wide. “Shared use paths are intended for use by bicyclists and pedestrians,” according to VDOT’s website.

Deltaville

  1. Phase one of the Deltaville shared use-path would run from the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad building to Jackson Creek Road. It would be on the south side of General Puller Highway (Route 33) and have a concrete or asphalt surface.
  2. Phase two would be a five-foot wide sidewalk along Jackson Creek Road from General Puller Highway to the Deltaville Maritime Museum.

The Deltaville shared-use path dates back to September 2019 when supervisors approved a request asking VDOT to seek $1 million in grant funding to establish a shared use path in Deltaville.

County officials have noted the paths are a component of economic development.
