Parishioners and guests are invited to attend the service and join in fellowship as the new chapter is recognized and its 11 new members are commissioned. The ceremony will include special prayers, presentations, and a reception following the service to celebrate this significant occasion.
Daughters of the King is an order whose members take lifelong vows to follow a Rule of Life, including a Rule of Prayer and a Rule of Service. They pray for their clergy and the world and help strengthen the parish’s spiritual life.
The Order, founded initially in New York City in 1885 as an Anglican lay religious order for women, now embraces members from the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches. Moreover, now there is an international component to the order with chapters in Augsburg, Germany, Rome, Italy and Mostoles, Spain. The Order has more than 30,000 members worldwide with 5,000 international members and approximately 25,000 members in the United States.
A modified Greek Cross with FHS (For His Sake) inscribed on it represents the Order’s Symbol and their motto is,
“For His Sake ….
I am but one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
What I can do, I ought to do.
What I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do.
Lord, what will you have me do?”
All are welcome to join them for the celebration and the reception following the service where we will also help celebrate the 97th birthday of Betty Evans.

Marlie Avant, a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock (UUFR), will lead the Sept. 21 service at the White Stone church, with a talk called, “Gravity, Grit and Grace: The Art of Aging Consciously.”
A Cobbs Creek resident with her husband Roy, Avant is being considered by UUFR’s membership to become its interim lay pastor. The congregation is expected to vote on her candidacy later this fall.
“We will explore how aging can be a vibrant, intentional journey — where the body may change, but the mind remains youthful and resilient,” Avant said of her upcoming talk. “Through stories and practical wisdom, we will discover how conscious aging lets us meet life’s gravity with grit and grace.
“This talk will challenge assumptions about decline, share strategies for mental vitality and invite you to reimagine aging as a time of growth, connection and creative possibility. Join us to learn how thoughtful awareness, purposeful choices and self-compassion can help you cultivate an ageless mind and a joyful spirit through every stage of life.”
The public is welcome to join UUFR’s members and friends to hear Avant’s presentation. The service starts at 10:30 a.m. at 366 James Wharf Road, White Stone.
If Avant becomes UUFR’s interim minister, UUFR’s Board of Stewards will continue its search for a permanent minister. UUFR’s previous minister of five years, the Rev. Susan Moseley, left in March 2024 to join her husband, the Rev. Jim Moseley, for their retirement in Brevard, N.C.
“Many of you have heard Marlie speak and know of her deep commitment to spiritual work and community engagement,” noted Janet Hemming, president of the UUFR board. “After reviewing her resume and speaking with her, the Interim Lay Minister Committee believes Marlie would be an excellent candidate for the interim position.
“Her Sept. 21 service is a wonderful chance for everyone to experience Marlie’s voice and vision,” a church spokesman said.
