The Virginia Tourism Corporation recently released its 2025 Economic Impact of Visitors study, conducted by Tourism Economics. The annual report measures the direct economic contribution of visitor spending in every Virginia county and independent city. The 2025 data shows visitors spent $30.5 million in Middlesex County, sustaining 216 jobs and generating $1.4 million in state and local tax revenue.
How the Study Works
The Virginia Tourism Corporation commissions Tourism Economics each year to calculate the direct impact of visitor spending — that is, the actual dollars visitors spend within each locality on lodging, food and beverage, retail, recreation, and transportation. Those expenditures flow through the local economy, supporting jobs and generating tax revenue that offsets costs to county residents and businesses.
