Urbanna water users amass $28,000 debt

The Town of Urbanna has more than $28,000 in delinquent water accounts that it will be working to collect.

The normal enforcement procedure for those who do not pay their water and sewer bills is for the town to shut off the water. However, shutting off water has not been permitted for more than a year.

Due to the economic downturn caused by COVID-19, Gov. Ralph Northam prohibited water companies from shutting off water of those with delinquent accounts, explained Zoning Administrator Roy Kime, who also manages water service.

Kime said the total amount due is $28,600 or about 15% of the water budget. The largest amount owed by one customer is $4,600…
